Southwest Truck Driver Training Joins the Conversation on Arizona’s Workforce Future

Arizona businesses need skilled workers. Arizona residents need careers that pay well and last. Closing the gap between the two takes schools, employers, and community groups working together.

That was the focus of the Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation’s annual Workforce Summit, held August 26, 2026, at the Marriott Phoenix Airport. Steve Strong, Vice President of Administration at Southwest Truck Driver Training (SWTDT), attended alongside business, education, and workforce development leaders from across the state.

What the Workforce Summit Covered

The Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation is a nonprofit that brings business, education, and community groups together to build a stronger Arizona workforce. Its yearly summit gives employers and educators a place to talk about hiring trends, share what is working, and form new partnerships.

This year’s sessions looked at talent development, career-focused education, and how training programs can better match what employers need. One featured topic was preparing workers for artificial intelligence. It was a clear reminder that every industry is changing, and transportation is no exception.

Training That Matches What Employers Need

A common theme at the summit was making sure training programs prepare people for the jobs that actually exist. Employers want new hires who can do the work on day one, not just people who passed a class.

In trucking, that means more than knowing how to operate a truck. Employers need drivers with safe habits, a professional attitude, and a clear sense of what the job expects. SWTDT builds its CDL training around those needs and keeps close contact with the carriers who hire its graduates. That feedback helps shape what students learn before they ever start their first job.

Preparing Workers for a Changing Industry

One summit topic focused on building a workforce ready for artificial intelligence and new technology. The session centered on what people bring to work that technology cannot replace.

That idea fits trucking well. Today’s drivers already work with electronic logging devices and in-cab technology, and those tools will keep changing. What stays the same is the need for good judgment, careful driving, and steady professionalism behind the wheel. Those are the skills SWTDT’s instructors work on with every student.

Partnerships That Build Arizona’s Workforce

The summit also stressed the value of partnerships between businesses and schools. SWTDT sees this firsthand in two ways.

First, carriers such as Werner and Schneider recruit SWTDT graduates, and every graduate has access to lifetime job placement assistance. Second, through its Business Development program, Southwest trains drivers for Arizona companies, cities, and utilities that need licensed employees.

Why Events Like This Matter

Events like the Workforce Summit give SWTDT a chance to listen, learn, and look at the bigger picture. Raising awareness of trucking careers, matching training to employer needs, and helping people move from the classroom to a paycheck all make a difference in the communities SWTDT serves.

Southwest Truck Driver Training thanks the Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation for bringing Arizona leaders together around this work. Since 1999, the school has trained more than 25,000 graduates, and it will keep doing its part to prepare Arizona’s next generation of professional drivers.
